It’s 4:52pm on a Tuesday. You look up from your laptop and the sky outside is already navy. Your body does the math before your brain does: wait, is it bedtime? You still have dinner to make, a text thread to answer, maybe a class to get to. And yet some ancient part of you wants to curl up under a blanket and call it a day.
That isn’t laziness. That’s biology. Welcome to November.

Every month I’m putting together a little menu for you. Part prescription (what’s actually worth trying), part prediction (what everyone’s suddenly talking about, and whether it’s worth the hype), part permission (the free stuff we keep forgetting works). All of it goes through one filter: does this help your nervous system feel safer, softer, more alive?
November’s theme: root down as the light leaves. Fewer hours of daylight, more hours with family, and a holiday that asks us to be grateful on command. This is the month to get grounded before December gets loud.
Pull up a chair. Here’s the menu. 🍂
🥖 STARTERS: Small Shifts for Shorter Days
Morning light, before your phone. Your stress hormone, cortisol, naturally rises in the 30 to 45 minutes after you wake up, and the biggest thing that sets that rhythm is light. When mornings get darker, 10 minutes of daylight on your face (even through clouds, even on a balcony) is one of the most powerful free tools you have for steadier energy and better sleep that night.
Golden hour, moved up. Sunset is around 4:50pm now. If you can, take your walk, your call or your snack outside at 4:15. That warm, low light tells your body evening is coming gently, instead of all at once. Bonus points for bare feet on grass or sand (here’s what grounding does to your nervous system).
One slower evening ritual. Pick one. Dim the lights after dinner. Light a candle. Shower in the dark (yes, it’s a whole TikTok trend, and honestly it’s lovely: less visual input, quieter brain). Small cues tell your nervous system the day is done.
🍲 MAINS: What We’re Really Here For
Protect your evenings like they’re sacred (because they are). The time change is a nervous system event, not just a calendar one. For the first week or two, go easy on yourself: earlier dinners, earlier wind-downs, fewer “quick” late-night scrolls. Your energy isn’t broken. It’s recalibrating.
Know your social battery before the holidays drain it. November is the warm-up lap for the holidays. Before you say yes to every Friendsgiving, ask: does this fill me up or wear me down? Both answers are allowed. Choosing on purpose is the point.
Gratitude, minus the performance. Gratitude practices genuinely help. A 2025 meta-analysis in PNAS (145 studies, more than 24,000 people in 28 countries) found they give wellbeing a small but real boost. But gratitude doesn’t mean pretending everything is fine. This year, try “both/and”: I’m grateful for this, and it’s been a hard year. Your nervous system trusts honesty more than forced positivity. (More on why I went from eye-rolling to obsessed: The Gratitude Practice I Rolled My Eyes At.)
Feed yourself like you love yourself. Warm, regular meals. Something grounding (roasted root veggies feel very on theme for a month about roots). Not a cleanse, not a reset. Just enough fuel to be kind to the body carrying you through a big season.
🥗 SIDES: Little Extras That Do a Lot
A 5-minute hum. Humming lengthens your exhale and creates vibration in your chest and throat. Slow exhales are one of the simplest ways to shift into “rest and digest.” More free tools like this in 5 Vagus Nerve Reset Tools You Can Actually Do This Week.
Yoga nidra before bed. A 2026 review of six clinical trials found yoga nidra helped people fall asleep faster, sleep longer and sleep more efficiently. Twenty minutes lying down counts as practice. (What the research says about yoga nidra for anxiety.)
A blanket a little heavier than you think you need. Weight and warmth are safety signals. Even if you have the windows open and the Ac blasttign to keep cool the cozier the bed the better you’ll feel.
A friend you call instead of text. Voices regulate us in a way emojis can’t.
🎧 Want to feel this instead of just reading it? My free 30-minute body scan sound bath Unwind Head to Toe is basically November’s menu in audio form. Put it on after dark, lie down and let your body do the rest.
🔮 THE PREDICTION: What Everyone’s Talking About
“Neurowellness” is going mainstream. The Global Wellness Summit (meeting in Thailand Nov 10-13) named nervous system regulation one of the biggest wellness shifts of 2026. Their phrase that stuck with me: regulation over results, sensation over scores. Wellness is moving from “optimize harder” to “feel safer.” I’ve been teaching this in every sound bath for years, so you can imagine my excitement. 😌 New to the idea? Start with What Is Nervous System Dysregulation (and Are You Living in It?).
The over-optimization backlash. People are tired of being graded on their sleep, steps and glucose. Data can be genuinely useful. The shift is toward treating it as information, not a report card. Check your numbers, then close the app and notice how you actually feel.
Somatic sleep is having a moment. More people are reaching for body-first wind-downs (progressive muscle relaxation, yoga nidra, breathwork, sound) to settle a wired nervous system at night. If you’re the “exhausted but wired” type, this one’s for you: You’re Exhausted. So Why Can’t You Sleep?
🤔 WORTH THE HYPE? The Cortisol Cocktail
It’s one of the most-searched wellness terms of the year: coconut water, orange juice, a pinch of salt and magnesium, sipped in the morning to “lower cortisol.” The honest verdict? It’s a perfectly nice drink. But cortisol follows a daily rhythm set mostly by light and sleep, not by what’s in your glass. Enjoy it if you like it, and honestly if you’re like me and you want a yummy little mocktail go for it! Just know your 10 minutes of morning sun is doing more of the heavy lifting, and it’s free.
🎁 THE FREEBIES: Wellness That Costs $0
Sunlight. A walk. Five slow breaths with a long exhale. A hug that lasts longer than 20 seconds. Singing in the car. An early night. Legs up the wall. Saying no. or lol turn on one of my soundbaths on YT.
You do not need to buy your way into being well.
🍰 DESSERT: The Permission Slip
You’re allowed to want more sleep in November. You’re allowed to cancel plans because it’s dark and you’re tired. You’re allowed to love the holidays and also find them a lot. Rest isn’t something you earn after you’ve done enough. 🤍
🛍️ TO-GO: Take One Thing With You
Pick ONE item from this menu and try it all month. That’s it. That’s the practice.
